About “Sweetener”

Sweetener is the fourth studio album by American singer Ariana Grande. It was released on August 17, 2018 via Republic Records. It is her first official studio project in two years since the release of her 2016 album, Dangerous Woman.

Frequent producers, such as Max Martin, Pharrell Williams, Ilya Salmanzadeh, and Savan Kotecha all took part in the album, mostly Williams being the producer of seven tracks from the record.

The album consists of fifteen tracks, three collaborations, and a colored album art, which breaks off from the habitual black & white aesthetics of Yours Truly, My Everything and Dangerous Woman.. Grande herself explained how the concept was made, telling one of her fans:

    In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on May 1st she revealed the album title would be Sweetener and added:

    It’s kind of about bringing light to a situation or to someone’s life or somebody else who brings light to your life or, sweetening the situation.

    Yes, on its day of release, Sweetener received 15.1 million album streams on Spotify, setting the U.S. Spotify record for the biggest opening day for a female artist.

    Ariana told PAPER:

    Dangerous Woman is a part of who I am, and of course, there’s a still a little bit of her in Sweetener, with “God is a woman,” and with “borderline” — definitely with those two records. But this record is way more feel-good, and I wanted to make people feel really good when they listen to this.

    Sweetener debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 231,000 equivalent album units and 127,000 from traditional album sales. It is her third album to debut in the top spot following Yours Truly and My Everything.
