Said The Spider To The Fly

The Paper Chase

Said The Spider To The Fly Lyrics

[Entry number one, I still hear the boots in the hallway]

[Spider:]
I want your head
I want your wicked parts
I want to wring out your evil thoughts
I want to eat out your bitter heart

I want your soul to sing six words harmony
Of all the pigs that might tempt me
I know you're sick alone and I'm telling everyone everything
So scratch it on the wall of your coffin on your sick day home
"And when your lover loves to cheat there's another you can meet
It's a short pier, it's a long walk home"

You gotta show me where it hurts
There's a beast and a burden
Kicking, spitting on your bathroom floor
This is your life, this is your life and
When I'm done it's over a little bit more

[Chorus:]
Good things die all the time
God bless your heart, vengeance is mine
'Kiss me like you mean goodbye,' said the spider to the fly
When all those times you thought that you were wrong, you were right

[Fly:]
So if I fight the good fight will hairlines recede?
Will lines deepen in face to craft a look of defeat?
I feel the end is near my little Monday night whore
My little Saturday night became a Sunday remorse

And it's all over America
The godless game show heathens

This is your life, this is your life
At last my good friend we are even
I know I'll never lose an arm, I'll never stay up staring at the phone
I'll never rot up with disease, don't you bury me and leave
Don't you leave me in the ground alone
You gotta show me where it hurts, never cremate me to burn
Never chop me up and throw me to sea
You'll never have to find the words they come spilling unrehearsed
But you and I will never find that peace

[Chorus:]
Good things die all the time
God bless your heart, vengeance is mine
'Kiss me like you mean goodbye,' said the spider to the fly
When all those times you thought that you were wrong, you were right

[Chorus:]
Good things die all the time
God bless your heart, vengeance is mine
'Kiss me like you mean goodbye,' said the spider to the fly
When all those times you thought that you were wrong, you were right

("Kinda laid across me, put his head across my chest like he was listening to my heart, because at that point he told me he was gonna eat my heart at that point."

"He said he was gonna eat your heart?"

"Yes, that's correct.")

About “Said The Spider To The Fly”

God Bless Your Black Heart opens with one of The Paper Chase’s signature songs, “Said The Spider To The Fly”, which immediately introduces the album’s central themes of religion, morality, jealousy, vengeance, and malcontent.

This song is commonly thought to be about Jeffery Dahmer, but John Congleton has explicitly denied this on Twitter. However, the sample at the end of this song actually comes from the testimony of Tracy Edwards at Jeffery Dahmer’s trial, and many other details of this song (e.g. “I want your head/I want your wicked parts”) line up very well with Dahmer’s crimes.

This apparent contradiction is best resolved by the assumption that John took inspiration from Jeffery Dahmer and other serial killers (e.g. John Wayne Gacy, who is sampled on “Ready, Willing, Cain and Able”), but did not write this song directly about them or from their perspectives.

  • What have the artists said about the song?

Before performing this song at a December 12, 2003 concert, John Congleton cryptically stated “this is a song about all the people who think the song’s not about them.”

  • What have the artists said about the official music video?

In episode 5 of the Kill Rock Stars Video Podcast, John Congleton talked about the music video for Said The Spider To The Fly. What follows is a transcription of this interview:

The story of the video “Spider To The Fly” is, uh – that song is off the album we put out two years ago called God Bless Your Black Heart, and it was directed by a really good friend of mine named Kris Youmans and his friend Kris Hardy. Kris Youmans is pretty well integrated into the band; he plays cello a lot with us live, and it was sort of just understood that he was gonna direct at least one video off of that album. He chose that song, he just kinda liked that song quite a bit and it made sense to me to make a video for that song, and I told him I thought it would be cool to do a video that sort of went along with the artwork pretty directly for that album, and I thought it interesting to have all these sort of
scenes with – one of the people in those scenes would be like missing their head, and everyone else would be sort of acting sort of uncomfortable around that person, but not necessarily acting like something grotesque was happening.

So the basic theme of that video that I really wanted to pull was just the feeling of, sort of isolationism even whenever you’re around a lot of people. I think it came across pretty well – the video turned out much better than I thought it would, actually. But I think that’s pretty much it. I just wanted, when you watch the video, I wanted you to kinda – just walk away kinda feeling a little sick to your stomach about how uncomfortable social engagements and whatnot can be.
