Connection

OneRepublic

Connection Lyrics

[Verse 1]
These days my waves get lost in the oceans
Seven billion swimmers, man I'm going through the motions
Sent up a flare, I need love and devotion
Traded for some faces that I never know, notion
Maybe I should try to find the old me
Take me to the places and the people that know me
Tryna just connect, thinking maybe you could show me
If there's so many people here, then why am I so lonely?

[Chorus 1]
Can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?
Can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?

[Verse 2]
Real friends, good friends – hard to find, let's face it
Buy the perfect home and there's a flood in the basement
Made a couple dollars now, but I ain't tryna chase it
Kids from Oklahoma, man we don't waste it
I'm just tryna paint the picture for me
Something I could give a damn about in maybe 40 years
And I be ready and willing and able to edit the story
Cause there's so many people here to be so damn lonely

[Chorus 2]
Can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?
Can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?
I can see it in my, see it in my reflection
Oh, can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?

[Refrain]
Lonely

[Bridge]
Right now, right now, I'm switching to a new lane
Foot to the floor, man searching for the real thing
Need somebody else, sometimes ain't no shame
Head to the clouds sayin'

[Chorus 3]
It's like can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?
Can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?
I can see it in my, see it in my reflection
Oh, can I get a connection?
Can I get, can I get a connection?

[Outro]
Uh
Tryna find the old me (Lonely)
Yeah

About “Connection”

The very first single off of OneRepublic’s fifth album, this song is unusually short – at two and a half minutes – yet lyrically dense, with a modern hip-hop influenced style.

Ryan Tedder here voices the universal, innate human longing for meaningful companionship. This song presents the flip side of 1R’s 2016 song A.I.; whereas in A.I. Ryan is afraid of having a real relationship – “I just want my love automatic” – here he is desperately seeking one.

The word “connection” in this modern technological world usually refers to an internet connection, not often a human one, which adds a touch of irony to Ryan’s plea. These days everyone is connected to so many different things: phones, laptops, TV’s, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat – but no one’s actually bothering to connect to each other, personally, face to face. It has been scientifically shown that the more “connected” we are to social media and electronics, the more likely we are to be depressed or lonely.

Ryan Tedder has previously expressed his intentions of making more serious, socially aware songs. In an interview with the German magazine Schön around August 2017, he said:

It’s critical to shed light on social problems. I’m doing my best to address issues that people are thinking about, issues that are real. People’s obsession with staring at their phones and living their lives through other people’s Instagram pages and feeling depressed about… their life… because they don’t have the same figure or the same money – that’s an issue and it’s one that more people should be writing about.

This is also a very personal song for Ryan and the band, as it reflects his own journey through life. Ryan’s life had become so hectic and hustle filled that by early 2016, shortly after the release of 1R’s fourth album Oh My My, he had to let his entire musical career come to a stop for many months to rest and reconnect with his wife and kids, who he was often away from for long periods of time on business. Even though he was doing what he loves, it was just too much. This song echoes that long pause to rediscover the truly important things in life.

  • What have the artists said about the song?

In an interview on Beat 1 with Zane Lowe, lead singer Ryan Tedder stated that there were around five leads chosen for their upcoming album. The plan was to get a lead single out in the summer, and “Connection” fit the summer vibe the most.
